Kinja'd!!!

Lada Signet (Complete with mismatched hubcaps!)

Kinja'd!!!

Skoda 135 GLi (Check out those bitchin’ Cibies)

Kinja'd!!!

Dacia 1310 GTL (Good news!)

Kinja'd!!!

And last, and very much least, the infamous Yugo. The only one of the lot sold in the States as well.

Fun fact: I’ve never seen any of these on the road, except one, the Skoda. I used to see plenty of Lada Nivas as well, but those are actually really cool, not crappy at all.

dacia aint crappy.

our old 1310 wagon (btw, that is also a 1310. 1410 didnt come until like 7 years after that one at least) has (wait for it) 750k KM on it last time I saw it kicking aorund in Onesti when i went to visit.

Jesus Christ.

I think the main thing that killed Dacias in Canada was the road salt, and the snow. Same for most econoboxes sold here in the 80s.

But Jesus, and Honda/Toyota/etc owners say they have sturdy cars.

they fucking LAST dude.

combine cast iron block, like and INCH of cylinder wall between pistons, timing chains thick enough for a buggati, and low compression pistons to make only 75HP out of 1310 CC, and its not all that hard to understand why they last so long either.

even my grandpas 1995 13010 has like 500k km on it. hasnt skipped a beat yet.

Can I just say that my car, built in 2006, makes 88hp from 1398 cc with DOHC, 16V and VTEC?

I think by the time these cars went out of production, it was either Mulroney or Chretien. The Lada was sold here until 199-fuckin-7.

Highschool gf’s family had a signet..

I remember it had a factory sticker accross the back window that said; ‘Assembled in Canada’..

Kinja'd!!!

I guess Lada thought that made it better?

Maybe it was to defer some of the Anti-Soviet feelings back then?

“Oh no, this car isn’t from Russia! See, the handles were put on in Ontario!”

I can’t imagine what Lada would’ve done if they sold cars in the States.

Either that or some shady tariff dodge - “Nope, we’re not importing cars.. just parts.”

I just remember it was always broken and waiting for parts.. I only saw it run once since 1996 and it’s probably still there in the driveway.

I’d totally rock a 2104.

Kinja'd!!!

Or a Niva with these stripes.

Kinja'd!!!

Weren’t the export versions of most of these cars built on their own “higher quality” assembly lines?

“Higher Quality” probably meant “Not ALL of our workers are smashed on vodka, only most.”

That being said, that striping is awesome.

The worst I remember were Subaru’s from the 80's growing up in Maine. The poor bastards that bought them would still be paying the note off as the car literally rotted into the ground before their eyes.

A common joke is that the cars were so shoddily put together that the factory recommended a complete teardown and reassembly to make sure everything was there and that all the bolts were tight before it was delivered to the customer. Rumour is that was standard practice at some of the more reputable dealers whether recommended by AvtoVaz or not. That would make for assembly in Canada.

A few features (such as the early implementation of DRL’s) that weren’t required (or even available) in other markets were added at the port or dealership. That technically would be assembly as well.
